Even though you know your life purpose, achieving it can feel too hard. You find yourself getting stuck, constantly feeling like you’re on life’s sideline. You want to change your life, but you don’t know how.
Endless self-help books and programs tell you that by trying harder or working harder, you’ll finally find success. But what if it doesn’t work?
This has happened to me. I know it first hand, going through endless self-help books, videos and exercises. I didn’t think that I was going to get the results I wanted and was sceptical. But it all worked out in the end. A couple of years ago, I tried everything to lead a happy life, but nothing helped me with anxiety or depression and my stress levels were at an all-time high. I was also unhappy and felt like nothing would ever change.
So what do you need to do first?

4 Simple Steps to Help You Find Your Life Purpose
1. Identify and Understand Your Values
Do you value having time for yourself? Do you value getting out in nature? Do you value being able to save money? Where are your values and limitations?
For example, if you value having time for yourself, then maybe you work fewer hours at a job that has less flexibility.
You might like to spend more time doing things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. If you value getting out in nature, then maybe you get your exercise by hiking or biking rather than spending time at the gym. If you value saving money, then maybe you choose to shop at thrift stores rather than buying new clothes or shoes. There is no right or wrong way to do this.
Your values are your beliefs about what is important. For example, if you value being healthy, then you may choose to exercise and eat well. If you value helping the environment, then maybe you recycle more often or drive a less gas-guzzling car than other people do. They may be personal values, such as the values you learned from your parents, or they might be more philosophical like “Life is about experimenting” or “People should be free to make their own decisions.”
2. List the Values You Value MOST
List all the values you value most. These are the values to which you do not want your life to be different in any significant way and by which you would like your life to be guided. I value being healthy, exercising and eating well. I value helping others who face difficult circumstances without judgement. I value freedom of choice. For example:
- Family
- Friends
- Doing a good job/work
- Learning new things
- Being compassionate
- Nature
- Exercise
- Health
- Wealth
- Freedom
3. List the Values You Value LEAST
These are the values to which you do not want your life to be different in any significant way but by which you would like your life to be guided. For example:
- Violence
- Materialism
- Greed
- Control
- Ignorance
4. Understand Your Personality
Your personality is the way you feel and act in different situations. It is not just your thoughts, but also the things you like to do and the way you are with other people. For example, if you value being healthy, then it may be hard for you to exercise every day because it’s hard for you to put your mind to it when you’re tired.
There are several different personality types in the world. Each personality type has its own strengths, weaknesses, and personal preferences.
We all have a unique, innate calling that is just waiting for us to notice it. This calling is our purpose. And it’s up to us to find and live out our life purpose.
The power of finding your life purpose is huge. It can change the way you see yourself, the world around you and others. It will also change the way you go about your day-to-day life, as well as how you spend your time and money.
Our life purpose is what we do with the time that life gives us. Our life purpose is whatever we choose it to be. In a sentence, our life purpose is determined by the way that we choose to live our lives and contribute to others.
Finding one’s life purpose is not an easy task but it’s worth all the effort!
