“Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.” ~ Joseph Campbell
I have recently posted an article where I was talking about self-love and because self-love is essential to living a happy and meaningful life, I have decided to write some more on the subject and to share with you more ideas on how to achieve that level of self-love you need in order to feel complete and whole. So how does one get there? Do you find it, do you work on it, you build it in time, do you discover it? How do we do this?
Well, from all the research I have made so far and from what my inner voice is telling me, I now know that all our answers are already within ourselves. It all comes from our inner world, and the same thing goes with self-love. It is there and it will always be there no matter how lost we may feel, no matter how unlovable and unworthy we may feel, no matter if we believe that to be true or not. There is a beautiful quote from Michelangelo that I believe would make you grasp this concept even better: “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
All the love that we need is already there, within ourselves, waiting to be discovered and the moment we do, we will also be able to see all the love that is outside ourselves. All the love that was there all along, waiting for us to discover it. For those who are new at this, for those who want to take their life in a new direction and find their inner peace and happiness, the first thing you’ll need to know is that it takes time, it takes practice, it takes patience, perseverance and it takes faith. And when I say faith I am not referring to faith in the religious sense, but faith in yourself and your ability to discover your real self, to discover that inner self love of yours, and you have faith in yourself you also have faith in the invisible intelligence that created you, whether you choose to call it God, Allah, Buddha and so on.
This is what you must first keep in mind. It’s not going to be a smooth ride and it’s not going to happen overnight. For some, it may happen in an instant while for others it may take months, years or even a lifetime, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be worth it, in fact, this might be your most incredible journey, a journey that will make you love every second of it.
Now that you know all of these, you need to decide whether you want to commit yourself to this or not. If you want to get on this journey of self-discovery or not. This is a very crucial point because the moment you decide to change your life around, the moment you decide that you do want to discover the infinite love that lies and waits for you within, there will be no turning back.
If you ask me, this is where most of us stop, because they aren’t able to commit themselves to something that they have no idea how long it will take, whether something will really happen or not, and whether they will find their inner and most valuable treasure or not. People want to see results right away and they want to know it will happen the moment they want it to happen. If you ask me, I would say that we are lousy at being patient. For most of us, it’s all a means to an end.
I am so thankful for I have learned that the destination is not as important as the person you become while getting there, and that is why I have come to treasure every moment of my life and to see it not as a means to an end but as a journey, as an adventure. I have learned that the moment I stop and think about how my life would look like the moment I get there or the moment I achieve the things I want to achieve etc.
I am in fact choosing to waste my time and energy, to waste my life to be more precise, because there is nothing more precious and real than the present moment, and I would never get to live, not even a second in the future, but only in the present moment. As far as I’m concerned, nothing ever happened to me in the past nor in the future, but only in the present moment and I don’t believe that will ever change.
The moment you decide to commit yourself to doing this, that will be the moment a shift will take place, an inner shift, a shift in consciousness. Whether you realize this or not, in your subconscious mind a major change will take place, and even though you may decide to quit from time to time, you will eventually go back to where you left off.
You now know that you no longer want to be the person you once were, you no longer want to look for love, approval, acceptance etc. out there, and you start working on yourself and the image you have in your head about yourself, working on healing yourself and the horrible self-image you have formed about yourself so far. This is something most of us need to do in order to find the peace and happiness that we all want. You now need to work on changing all those negative thoughts and ideas about you not being good enough, about you not being smart enough, beautiful enough and so on, and you do this by changing your thoughts and your beliefs, by healing your negative beliefs about yourself, knowing that the moment you start feeling good about yourself, others will feel good about you also.
You see, it’s not really that important how you look and how smart or stupid you may think you are as your attitude toward yourself, the way you choose to present in the world, but it might take a while until you realize this to be true. I can tell you that I have personally encountered so many beautiful people, people who would see themselves as being ugly, too fat, too skinny, too stupid, too dumb etc. and believe me, those around them weren’t as drawn to them as they were toward those that may not have been as beautiful and smart as those from above.
You see, it’s more about how you perceive yourself to be, it’s more about how confident you are and how you present yourself in the world. You may be the most beautiful woman/ man on the face of the earth, but if you lack self-esteem if you aren’t confident and if you see yourself as lacking this and that, if you see yourself with flaws, if you see yourself as being dumb, ugly, fat, worthless etc. , people will feel that, and even though at first sight they might like you and they might want to be around you, once they will get to know the real you, they will start running as fast as they can. Nobody wants to be around people like that for they take the energy out of you. It’s what you see and what you think about that which you see that truly matters.
You need to take actions and you need to work on changing the poor image you have about yourself because if you don’t, you will never really find your peace. Can’t you see how all things arise from within? How all your problems and all your joys arise from how you choose to think about yourself and the world around you?
”The greatest discovery of our generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. As you think, so shall you be.” ~ William James
You see, what most of us don’t understand is that, just because we can’t stand to take a look at our reflection in the mirror, and just because we think we are dumb and stupid, ugly and fat, that doesn’t mean we really are all of that. That doesn’t mean we are what our thoughts tell us. We have all kind of crazy thought and a lot of them are very negative and unfortunately, most of us choose to believe them and because of that, we start identifying ourselves with them which is nothing more than a big mistake. This way we would always be at the mercy of our thoughts.

I am the only one in my family that gets this and I did not want to be bi-polar.

Thank you for this post. I’ve been reading a lot recently about how to love and accept yourself in order to be a happier person, but what I really like about your post is that it refers to all the questions that arose to me: How long does it take? Is it a useless thing to do and shall I give up if I have setbacks again and again? You gave a very concrete and vivid description of what this process and in the first step the decision to go through this process means. Thanks a lot for that! It motivates!
