“WE ALREADY HAVE everything we need. There is no need for self-improvement. All these trips that we lay on ourselves—the heavy-duty fearing that we’re bad and hoping that we’re good, the identities that we so dearly cling to, the rage, the jealousy and the addictions of all kinds—never touch our basic wealth. They are like clouds that temporarily block the sun. But all the time our warmth and brilliance are right here. This is who we really are. We are one blink of an eye away from being fully awake.”~ Pema Chödrön, Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living
Seeing that I’ve always felt kind of different, for a long period of time I’ve been trying to “fix” myself in order to be normal. To improve myself, so that I could fit in a world where I was seen as a weirdo. But the harder I struggled, the harder it seemed to get somewhere, to see results. And because I was trying to change more and more things about myself, I got to a point where I didn’t recognize myself anymore.
I was feeling like I had lost my true Self, my identity and had become someone completely different. And you want to know something else? I still wasn’t able to fit in, I still didn’t feel accepted and happy.
The interesting thing was what happened when I finally stopped trying to “improve” my Self. When I started accepting my true and authentic Self as it was given to me, that’s when I realized that I already had everything I needed in order to feel happy, whole, complete. I didn’t feel like people were looking at me differently and it felt so relieving to be myself without the fear of being criticized, mistreated or misunderstood.
Maybe you too have done the same at one point of your life, but where did it get you?
The moment you stop disguising your true Self with traits that are not yours, acting differently than you normally would, and so forth. The moment you open your eyes and truly see yourself, that’s when you realize that you already have everything you need to feel happy, good enough, fulfilled. You were created in a way that is the perfect way for you to be. Your true and authentic Self is there, within you, and all these “improvements” that you think you need, are only covering that beautiful person you truly are.
Pema Chödrön explains it so beautifully in this Super Soul Sunday video and the reason I wanted to share it with you today is that I hope it will guide you towards finding the wisdom to accept and allow your true and authentic Self to the surface.
Enjoy 🙂

P.S: Don’t forget: Be happy you already have everything you need, there is no need for Self-improvement!
