We all go through difficult times. We all experience pain, loss, fear, darkness, and sorrow. And even though the tendency is to run away and escape from all these unwanted feelings, we can’t. Difficult times are part of life.
And today I will share with you 10 things worth remembering during difficult times, things that are meant to make your journey much easier and help you turn your pain into wisdom and your difficulties into opportunities.
10 Things Worth Remembering During Difficult Times
1. You are not alone
Just look how beautifully A Course in Miracles talks about this:
“If you knew who walked beside you at all times, on the path that you have chosen, you could never experience fear or doubt again.” ~ A Course in Miraclesudd
During difficult times, more than ever, there is a tendency to try to control everything that happens to you and all around you. And whether you are aware of this or not, this terrible need for control comes from a fearful and toxic belief that you are all alone in a hostile and fearful world, and that you need to figure it all out on our own.
You are not alone. Nobody is. And the more you learn to walk through the darkness with trust and confidence – in yourself, and in all of Life’s Wisdom, the easier it will be for you to walk through darkness and not give it any power over you.
2. Don’t run away from pain
We are taught to run away from pain, sadness, sorrow, and anything that can make us feel sad and uncomfortable. But did you know that there are Buddhist monks who actually pray for pain and sorrow?
Yes!
They know things most people don’t, and they understand that pain has the power to burn out everything that’s dark in us, making us shine brighter than the Sun and allowing us to reconnect with the Truth of who we are and the Truth of who everyone else is. And unlike many of us, instead of running away from pain, they run joyfully into it.
3. Let Life guide you
If you only knew the amount of love that’s being directed toward you every single moment of the day, and the care and compassion Life has for you, you would surrender all your troubles and you would allow Life to do what Life needs to do – Love, Nurture, Guide and Protect you.
Difficult times can be scary indeed, but only if you try to figure it all out on your own. Only if you think you have to do it all yourself.
You are not alone. Life is here to guide you. And if you let it, it will show you the path you need to go and it will show you the things you need to learn.
4. Take your focus away from the pain
“If you judge after appearances, you will continue to be enslaved by the evidence of your sense.” ~ Neville Goddard
Don’t feed the darkness. Forget about what is, about what you see, what you think and what you feel. Instead, focus on that which you would like to feel and see happening in your life. Know that the more you focus on what is wrong – the pain, the struggle, the fears, the darkness, etc., the more pain and struggle you will create in your life, and the harder your journey will get.
5. You are not being punished
Believe it or not, you are not being punished for the mistakes of your past. On the contrary. You are being cleansed, purified and refined. All that is dark is being washed away so that your Light, your Truth, your Beauty, and Perfection can shine brighter than ever.
6. Remember to let go
We go through life thinking we know so much about everything and everyone – about who we are, how our lives should unfold, what things should happen, what things shouldn’t happen, etc.. And because we are so attached to all of these thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and expectations, we fail to realize that maybe Life has different plans for us, and that maybe, the things we want aren’t necessarily the things we need in our lives.
“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond the winning.” – Lao Tzu
This is one of the most important things you need to remember during difficult times: that you can’t control the course of life, nor should you try to. All you have to do is let go of fixed plans and concepts, beliefs and expectations, and allow life to follow its natural course.
7. It’s worth it
It’s true that joy feels better than pain, and tears of laughter taste better than the tears of sorrow. But it’s also true that the Joy, Peace, and Serenity you start to feel as the dark clouds lift away are more delicious than anything you have ever experienced before. So don’t give up. A moment of pain is worth a lifetime of Peace, Joy, and Laughter.
8. It is in difficult times that you find the light
Don’t be fooled by what you see. Trust the words of the great mystic, Meister Eckhart, and know that:
“Truly, it is in darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest of all to us.” – Meister Eckhart
10. You’ll be fine
You are the Sun, and the difficult times are the clouds that just come and go. You are not the clouds, you are the Sun. Always remember that and you’ll be fine.
