Self-Confidence: 5 Steps for Gaining Confidence

It’s everyone’s goal to be able to look in the mirror in the morning, smile at themselves, and walk out the door to tackle the day with confidence. However, confidence isn’t always something that you have innately. Sometimes, it takes work to get to a point where you can feel good about yourself and harbor a healthy self-esteem.

5 Steps for Gaining Self-Confidence

Where do you get started, though? How do you get from a point where you aren’t all that confident in yourself to a point that you are rife with self-confidence? In this article, we are going to take a look at 5 steps for gaining self-confidence.

1. Take Steps to “Improve” Your Look

A big part of self-confidence is that we are all painfully aware of what we perceive as our flaws. For many people, a big part of this is how we perceive ourselves visually. After all, if you look in the mirror in the morning and aren’t confident in how you look, you aren’t going to feel confident in yourself.

However, there is no one surefire way to make yourself look and feel attractive in your own eyes.

As such, you should take steps that make you, individually, feel more attractive. This could include going to work out more or buying new clothes. The best way to make sure you look and feel attractive though is to improve for yourself. For example, when you try on clothes, don’t think about what someone else would find attractive on you. Instead, look for things that you look in the mirror and feel good about wearing.

That’s really the key to this. If you want to feel good about yourself, you have to put yourself first in your mind for a while. If you are buying something or changing something because someone else will like it and you have to remind yourself that you look good, that’s not improving your self-confidence.

The key to self-confidence in the long run is to work towards a point that you feel confident in yourself constantly. You shouldn’t have to talk yourself into self-confidence every morning. A false bravado is superficial but true self-confidence runs deeper than that.

2. Work on Your Motivation

If you want to make changes to your self-confidence, you have to be motivated to make these changes. This can be hard because improving your self-confidence isn’t an overnight job. Rather than that, you are committing to a process that takes weeks or more so you can feel more confident in who you are.

Much like self-confidence, though, motivation can be difficult. After all, it isn’t something you wake up and decide to do one morning. Luckily, there are some tricks you can use to improve your motivation in general and toward your own self-improvement.

Some natural ways to increase motivation start by simply taking care of yourself so you have the energy to get what you want to be done. This includes steps such as getting enough sleep and making sure you eat a well-rounded diet. Different dopamine supplements or energy boosting nootropics may also help, but we advise consulting with medical health professional before taking any of these.

3. Be with Friends

When you are trying to build your self-confidence, the last thing that helps is to be torn down by someone else. Plus, in all honesty, you should try to remember that you deserve people around you who will support you in who you are and who you are becoming.

As you work toward your goal of being more confident in yourself, don’t be afraid to make changes in the people around you. If you have friends that support you and build you up, keep them close to you. If you have people around you that do little more than bring you down or use you, don’t feel bad about cutting them out of your life. At no point are you required to sacrifice your own happiness for someone else’s in the long run.

4. Don’t Be Afraid of Risk

If you want to learn who you need to be and what you need to do to become more self-confident, you can’t be afraid of change and risk. After all, nothing is gained from staying in the same place your whole life. When risk comes, remember that it brings with it a potential for great reward.

5. Don’t Get Discouraged or Overwhelmed

Finally, the biggest part of working on your self-confidence is to not sell yourself short. The fact of the matter is that you aren’t going to transform the way you think about yourself overnight. As we’ve mentioned before in this article, it can take a lot of time to get to a point where you are truly happy with yourself.

During this journey, you are probably going to have a night or two where you feel like you failed your goals. Even after you’ve found significant self-confidence, it’s more than possible that you’ll have an off day or an off night. Remember, this is only a part of the process and doesn’t mean that you failed.

When these moments come, try not to dwell on what you have left to do to reach your goal. Instead, turn your focus toward how far you’ve come and how much more progress you can make. You aren’t the same person you once were and if you could make drastic improvements in the past, just think about what great and positive changes you can make if you give yourself just a little more time.
