15 Valuable Life Lessons to Learn from Vishen Lakhiani

Therefore the Master steps back so that people won’t be confused. He teaches without a teaching, so that people will have nothing to learn.”~ Lao Tzu

I had the privilege to work with a really wonderful company called Mindvalley for two years, I can say that those were some of the best years of my life. Why? Because of all the amazing people I met, the beautiful friendships that were built, the powerful and life changing lessons I have learned and the person I became because of it all.

Words can’t really express how grateful I am for this whole experience and how much I appreciate Vishen Lakhiani, the founder, and CEO of Mindvalley who is also a dear friend of mine, for impacting my life in such a beautiful and powerful way and for teaching me so many valuable life lessons.

15 Valuable Life Lessons to Learn from Vishen Lakhiani

What I will share with you today are 15 valuable lessons to learn from Vishen Lakhiani. Enjoy 🙂

Enjoy 🙂

1. Gratitude.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of Vishen Lakhiani is “gratitude”.

I have never met anyone who expresses their gratitude and appreciation as much as Vishen does. For everything that happens, whether good or bad, he is constantly expressing his gratitude and appreciation.

“Gratitude is the key to happiness. When gratitude is practiced regularly and from the heart, it leads to a richer, fuller and more complete life… It is impossible to bring more abundance into your life if you are feeling ungrateful about what you already have. Why? Because the thoughts and feelings you emit as you feel ungrateful are negative emotions and they will attract more of those feelings and events into your life.” ~ Vishen Lakhiani

2. Embrace your authenticity.

By embracing your real and authentic Self and by allowing your own light to shine, you give others permission to do the same. Don’t hide your beauty. Don’t hide your greatness. Just because other people dim their inner light, it doesn’t mean you have to do the same. Don’t try to fit in. Just be yourself. Be real. Embrace your authenticity and know that by doing so you will attract people and experiences into your life that will be as real and authentic as you are.

3. Forgiveness.

When people act in cruel and evil ways towards others its because they act in cruel and evil ways towards themselves. Don’t take it personally. Don’t poison yourself by holding on to resentment. Be willing to forgive those who have harmed you and move with your life. Forgive and let go.

“Running a multi-million dollar business can be frustrating at times, especially when someone does something I am not happy with. It might not even be their fault, but it is human nature to reach in an angry or heated way. However, I have learned an important and effective lesson. Rather than complain to my member of staff about their actions, I search my memory bank for things I find wonderful about them. This changes the energy around the issue instantly. People tend to live up to what you expect of them.” ~ Vishen Lakhiani

4. Humility.

No matter how far you go in life and no matter how successful you might become, keep your two feet on the ground. Stay humble. Stay grounded. Your value doesn’t not come from your material possession but from who you are as a person and from how you treat your fellow humans.

5. Kindness.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Dave Barry and it goes like this: “A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person.”

Well, guess what? Vishen is what Dave Barry would call a nice person. What I have learned from him is to always act in kind, loving and respectful ways towards everyone. To never talk down to anyone, no matter how small and insignificant they might seem in the eyes of the world.

6. Playfulness.

Turn work into play. Don’t take yourself and your life too seriously. Keep your inner child alive. Be soft and flexible. Be silly. Be weird. Laugh, play. Have fun in all that you do. Be happy!

7. Live life with an open heart.

Allow love to rule your life. With an open heart and a big smile on your face, embrace every experience life sends your way, whether good or bad. By doing so, no experience will ever be wasted.

8. Be good to your soul.

Vishen used to be a Silva instructor and in my first year of Mindvalley, he did a really beautiful guided meditation for us in the office. After that experience, I started meditating every single day,  3 times a day for a total of 90 minutes . That’s how big if an impact his meditation had on me. Now I love to meditate and I can’t imagine my life without it 🙂

9. Dare to make mistakes.

Give yourself and others permission to make mistakes. If you condemn your mistakes, they will remain mistakes but if you learn from them, they will become stepping stones towards a better life.

10. Dare to ask questions.

There is a beautiful Chinese Proverb that goes perfectly here: “He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.”

Before I joined Mindvalley and before I met Vishen, I wasn’t very comfortable with asking too many questions, especially at work, just because I was afraid that people might find my questions silly. From working with Vishen I have learned that if you really want to understand something, you have to ask as many questions as possible without the fear of being judged or laughed at 🙂

11. Only as high as you reach can you grow and only as much as you dream can you be.

If you want to live life fully, dare to dream big. Aspire to inspire. Dare to be the best you can be. The bigger the dreams you dream, the more exciting your life will get and the smaller your problems will become.

“Dream big and your problems become small.” ~ Vishen Lakhiani

12. Everyone has something to teach you.

A really beautiful thing I noticed about Vishen is the fact that he is always willing and open to hear what you have to say, no matter if you are the senior partner or just an intern. He knows everyone has something to teach him and he is willing and open to listen and learn from you 🙂

13. Be of service.

Share your gifts, your work and your beautiful Self with the world around you. Seek to give, to serve and to leave the place better than it was then you arrived. Seek for ways to contribute, to inspire and empower those around you. Give of yourself to the whole world and life will pay you back tenfold.

14. Be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

Learn to celebrate other people’s successes as if they are your own and trust that by doing so, their success become yours as well.

15. Make every person you meet feel like there is something valuable in them.

You know that quote from Mark Twain where he talks about how: “Really great people make you feel that you, too, can become great”? Well, this is exactly what Vishen does. He knows how to make you feel like you too can be great and that you too can achieve big, bold and beautiful things…

And these are 15 of the many valuable life lessons I have learned from Vishen Lakhiani. Hope you enjoy reading them because I surely enjoyed writing them 🙂
