Gabor Mate On Living In a Society that Undermines Authenticity

“That inner voice has both gentleness and clarity. So to get to authenticity, you really keep going down to the bone, to the honesty, and the inevitability of something.”~ Meredith Monk

What is auhenticity?

What does the word authenticity and being authentic really mean?

If we think about it, growing up, none of us have heard this word either in our homes, in our schools, with our friends. Nowhere.

Authenticity

Why is that?

Why do we have to hear and read about it only later on in life?

Why is that none of our teachers encouraged this trait in us?

Maybe because they weren’t taught themselves and at the end of the day, we pass onto others what we ourselves know and experienced, right?

Well, it is very important for us to understand who we truly are and what makes our hearts jump with joy, what sparks passion within ourselves and literally gets us to get out of bed in the morning.

No matter what it is, as long as we don’t pin point it, we’ll always be going with the flow, our lives will always be dictated by the society and any other external factors.

“Authenticity is the alignment of head, mouth, heart, and feet – thinking, saying, feeling, and doing the same thing – consistently. This builds trust, and followers love leaders they can trust.”~ Lance Secretan

Look deep within yourself and assess where your heart is right now. Write it on a piece of paper if you will but with total honesty and after that, just watch this short video of Dr. Gabor Mate explaining in such a simple manner where we are now as a society.

I get goosebumps every time I listen to this.
