5 Steps to Discovering Your Life's Calling

I believe there’s a calling for all of us. I know that every human being has value and purpose. The real work of our lives is to become aware. And awakened. To answer the call. ~Oprah Winfrey

Discovering Your Life’s Calling

Why am I here? What is my deepest purpose? What is my calling in this world?

These questions spill across my mind and splatter onto my bed, as I lie awake at night, fluffing my pillow in search of comfort. I am on a journey of self-discovery, tied up in existential questioning. I finally fall asleep and dream, letting my mind sort the pieces of the path.

5 Steps to Discovering Your Life’s Calling

Does this sound familiar to you? I think we all struggle with these questions because we are thinking beings sharing this planet. Here are five ways to discover your life’s calling and bring peace to your soul.

1. Re-imagine what you liked to do as a child

We are all intuitive as children. Children have no preconceived ideas about the world and how things “should” work. Children have rich imaginations and strong connections between their minds and spirits. They easily connect with their inner truth as they express grand dreams for the future.

We too often lose this connection as we grow up. We shrink under the bullying of classmates or the harsh words spoken by our parents. Our teachers tell us to “stop daydreaming” and pay attention. Our spiritual dreams are belittled or forgotten as we learn to function in the “real” world.

I believe that we come into the world knowing the truth about our purpose. As a child, I used to tell stories about fairies, unicorns, and magical worlds of emerald trees growing by rainbow waters. When I learned to read and write, I put my words onto paper, until the adults in my life told me these stories were silly and I needed to learn to write “proper” papers. Now I am reawakening to my joy of writing and my calling to mysticism.

What clues do you see in your childhood? What did you love to do? Let these early dreams reawaken and guide you on the path.

2. Discover how you can bring light and love to your neighborhood, your community, the world

We do not exist alone. We are all connected in a cosmic web. We need each other, no matter how much our culture might claim otherwise. Many people live in cages of fear and loneliness, longing for healing and human contact. When we break through our own fears and hang-ups to reach out and free another from their cage, we find own bars slipping away. We find our truest purpose when we bring joy and healing to others.

Sometimes I am overwhelmed by all the problems in the world, but then I remember that change starts at home. I focus on bringing light and love to myself, then my family, then my neighborhood and community. If we all reach out to another, the whole world will soon change.

What is life saying to you on the path of connectedness and love?

3. Nurture the unique gifts you bring to the world and to your own happiness

We are all beautiful individuals, created to fulfill a unique calling in this world at this time. I have found that I am an empath, I feel the pain of others, and, through this, I also have a gift to bring healing to others. I also have musical and artistic gifts, which I develop to feed my own soul and to bring happiness to others.

What gifts do you bring? Are you an artist, or a talented speaker? Do you like to encourage others, be the life of the party? Or do you like to curl up under a tree and write or meditate thoughts of goodwill to the world? Whatever gifts you have, we need them!

Open up to your life’s calling and share it with us. Make your life, and our whole world, a richer place.

“You have a unique gift to offer this world. Be true to yourself, be kind to yourself, read and learn about everything that interests you and keep away from people who bring you down. When you treat yourself kindly and respect the uniqueness of those around you, you will be giving this world an amazing gift… YOU!”~ Steve Maraboli

4. Find peace in your present moment

We all live in the present moment with many gifts and joys, despite the difficulties in our individual paths. I know this, but, sometimes I can find myself paralyzed by past pain or regret, or find myself chasing, warp-speed, fear of the future. My purpose is right here, right now. What can I do today, this moment, to make life better for myself and others?

Is anything holding you back from this moment? I offer you this challenge: let go, let love and peace flow, and remember the wisdom of the old spiritual, he’s got the whole world in his hands. The Universe will take care of you as you pursue, fearlessly, your highest calling.

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.”~ Eckhart Tolle

5. Embrace the unknown

We tend to have a fear of the unknown, some people more than others, but finding your life’s calling requires the courage of embracing uncertainty. What is holding you back?

Do you need to pick up the phone and have that conversation of forgiveness to release your soul and your gifts? Maybe you need to leave your unfulfilling job to pursue that exciting, but less stable, opportunity. Or maybe you feel unsatisfied because you need to speak up for injustice or healing in your current job. The results of all of these opportunities are unknown but are part of life’s calling.

“When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for you to stand upon or you will be taught to fly.”~ Patrick Overton
