“There are certain stories we need to stop telling ourselves for they have the power to hurt, not only who we are, but all those we love as well. Through our lack of honesty, courage, and integrity, we set an example for those we love, communicating to them and to the whole world that it’s okay to betray oneself. It’s okay to give up on all you once believed to be right and true for you just so you can continue to believe a lie…” ~ Luminița D. Saviuc
Stories We Tell Ourselves
Life can get intense at times. So intense that you start to feel as though there’s not much for you to do in the face of the many challenges, misfortunes, traumas, and painful experiences that come your way.
Thus, you give up.
You give up on your right to Love, to Life, to Freedom, and to Joy. And you start to tell yourself all kinds of stories that are meant to help you cope with the heaviness and many pains of life…
It happens…
12 Stories We Need to Stop Telling Ourselves
1. It’s all over for me.
There’s nothing left for me to do, to be, and to have in order to feel fulfilled, content, joyful, and at peace.
It’s all over for me.
My best life is behind me…
This is one of the many stories we tell ourselves in order to justify the lack of movement, clarity, focus, and meaning in our lives.
We are only human. It happens…
But just because failure, misery, defeat, misfortune, drama, and trauma are part of the human experience, it doesn’t mean we should allow them to define who we are.
We should never allow them to limit us and our life experiences!
No matter how low we may fall, and no matter how impossible it may seem to start all over and rebuild our lives from scratch, we can make it happen. Maybe not as gracefully as we would like to. But we can get back up and make it happen. And it all starts with a belief and a desire to do so.
2. My best life is behind me.
The second of the many stories we tell ourselves is that all that was once wonderful, loving, and worthy of praise in our lives is in the past; All the wonderful people, experiences, feelings, adventures are all long gone. And from here on there will be no more room in our lives for excitement, love, creation, laughter, joy, and adventure.
Well, as long you believe this to be true, it will be true for you. But why would you choose to hold onto such unhealthy and toxic beliefs?
You deserve better than that.
Yes, beautiful things happened in your past. But they can also happen in your present and future life. And you are the one who can make them happen all over again.
Just make an effort to let go of your self-defeating thoughts and limiting beliefs. And focus all your energy and attention, not toward feeling story for yourself and staying stuck in the past. But towards creating a new and ridiculously amazing life for yourself.
3. I don’t know.
I don’t know what to do with myself.
I don’t know what to do with my life.
I don’t know who I am.
I don’t know how to live anymore.
I don’t know how to change.
I don’t know how to create a better life.
I just don’t know…
I know life can be hard at times. And I know it can be quite challenging to hear someone tell you that YOU, know what to do.
But the truth of the matter is that you do know.
At the core of your Being, you have all the answers you need to make the shift. But in order for you to get access to these answers, you have to be still. And you have to learn to listen to your inner voice and follow your intuition.
4. I can’t do this, I can’t do that… I just can’t.
“If we think we can’t, we won’t. If we think we can, we will.” ~ Luminița D. Saviuc
If we are brave enough to do a ‘crazy’ thing and shift our thinking from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’, we will soon discover that the only thing standing in the way of us being, doing, and having all the wonderful things we once dreamed of achieving, was that one, ‘I can’t’…
It’s all a matter of perception.
The thoughts you think, shape, and mold you, giving birth to your beliefs. And then, your beliefs will give birth to the actions that will, later on, shape you and your whole life.
Therefore, if you think you can, you will find a way to make it happen. But if you tell yourself that you can’t, you will find a billion ways to sabotage and prove to yourself that you can’t! That’s how these stories work.
5. Nobody will help me.
We are vibrational beings all made up of energy. The signals we send out there, through our many self-defeating thoughts and feelings, communicate to the whole world how poorly we think of ourselves and how little we think we deserve to receive from life.
If you think you are all alone, abandoned, and neglected, and that nobody will help you, that’s exactly what the outer world will reflect back at you.
But if you choose to make a shift in consciousness and replace those toxic thoughts with other thoughts that are more loving and self-empowering, you will soon discover that the world is full of people who are eager to help, guide, love, and support you. You just have to open yourself up and allow their love to be poured on you.
6. I am all alone.
I know you often feel like you are all alone in this world. And I know these feelings can feel quite real and true.
But they aren’t!
You are not alone. You never were and never will be. And you know why? Because just as I shared in my book,
At the core level, we are all ONE, connected with one another in a very deep and powerful way. At the core level, we are essentially the same, all members of one human race. There is no separation except the separation we create in our minds because of our attachment to fear. ~ 15 Things You Should Give Up to Be Happy: An Inspiring Guide to Discovering Effortless Joy
We are all connected. And this false sense of separation comes to us only when we fall out of love and start living in fear.
When you live from a place of Love, there is no separation, only deep, meaningful, and loving connections. And from that place you know that Love is Truth and fear is nothing but an illusion… one of the many stories we tell ourselves.
7. I am unworthy.
One of the most hurtful stories we tell ourselves is that we are unworthy and never enough. That we need endless approval and validation from the world around us. And if we don’t get it, it’s only because there’s something seriously wrong with us.
Well, guess what?
In Truth, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. But there is something seriously wrong with this world that wants you to constantly chase its love, approval, and validation, even if that means betraying yourself and being something you are not.
You are not a puppet!
You are a Divine, Eternal, Worthy, and Unlimited Being – created in the image and likeness of Divinity Itself. And if Divinity needs no proof of worth, why would you?
8. I am a helpless victim.
How many of these stories have you told yourself lately?
Like this one, that you’re a helpless victim.
With your thoughts, you give life to new worlds and new experiences. But if you’re stuck in thinking the same thoughts and feeling over and over again, you will not feel like a creator, but rather like a helpless victim. And instead of you being in control over your environment, the environment will have power and control over you.
The world might want you to think you are helpless, small, and insignificant.
But you are not!
You are a powerful creator. And if you make a bold choice to take back your power and step into your Truth, you will eventually go from feeling like a victim to realizing that you are a powerful creator!
9. They did this to me.
I know it can be quite challenging to assume responsibility for everything that happens in your life – good and bad, beautiful and ugly, painful, and joyful – sometimes you just don’t want to do it. But if you dwell in that dark and unhappy place called ‘blame’ for too long, you will eventually start to think that it is true: they did this to you!
Don’t let that happen to you.
Assume responsibility for everything in your life. And if something is ‘not right’ in your world, don’t give your power away by blaming others. Just own your Power and just choose to change what can be changed. And let Life take care of the rest.
10. Life is against me.
Another one of the many stories we tell ourselves is that life is against us. And that everything in this world is only meant to hurt, harm, and punish us for God knows what reasons.
Again, if you choose to believe this to be true, it will be true for you. But why would you do that to yourself?
Make the shift.
Choose to perceive it as a lie. And in doing so, you will get out of your own way and you will allow life to work For you, no longer Against you.
11. Nobody cares.
You want PEOPLE to show you they care, and people want YOU to show them that YOU care. And in this silly game you all play, love gets lost and so many people begin to feel like nobody cares…
But we do.
People care. They care a lot. And that is one of the reasons why they close their hearts to love, fearing that if they show how much they care, all those who don’t will only hurt and harm them even more.
I know. It’s complicated. But if YOU really want to feel the love of those around you, and if you want THEM to show YOU how much THEY care, why not start by loving them first?
Start by showing them how much YOU care. In doing so, love will flourish and hearts that were once closed will be opening again. And all because YOU were brave enough to show you care.
12. I am not good enough.
On the list of stories we tell ourselves we will also find this story about not being good enough. But let me ask you something. Good enough for what?
For pretending to be something you are not? For trying to please a crowd whose attention span is no longer than a few seconds? For wanting to be the way the world tells you to be instead of being who you were created to be?
Come on. You are good enough!
Not because I say so. Not because it sounds cute and trendy. But because that’s how Divinity created you: Perfect, Flawless, and Divine! And maybe the time has come for you to stop telling yourself stories that hurt and wound you and start telling yourself Truths that will empower, nourish, and liberate you from all feelings of doubt, fear, insecurity, lack, and unworthiness.
And these are the 12 stories we need to stop telling ourselves. It is my hope that by sharing them with you, you will feel inspired and empowered to let go of everything that’s hurting you. And replace these stories with truths that will bless, nourish, and bring you back to life.
