The Ultimate Guide to Feeling at Home Even When You're Away from Home

Being away from home can be an exciting adventure. However, feeling comfortable in an unfamiliar place can also be challenging, whether we’re traveling, studying abroad, or living somewhere new, away from our loved ones.

We all go through this discomfort now and then, but I want you to know that there are ways to feel at home even if you’re away from home.

I have experienced this myself during my travels and while living in different countries. Also, as a certified Travel & Life Coach this is one of the things I help my clients with, and I’d love to share some of my tips with you here. Don’t expect a quick fix though, but a beautiful journey that is worth embarking on.

Feeling at Home Away from Home

Remember that it’s completely normal and okay to feel uncomfortable or out of our element when we’re away from home. In fact – that’s a great opportunity to grow, challenge ourselves and learn new things! When we embrace the challenges of being in a new place, we can come out the other side stronger and more confident than we could ever imagine.

I’ve experienced this every time that I’ve moved somewhere new or gone on a solo trip. At first, I felt the discomfort. I felt out of place and like I didn’t really belong. I felt awkward and overwhelmed. And you know what, it’s a natural response to feel a bit unsettled when we immerse ourselves in an unfamiliar experience.

However, I also knew that these thoughts and emotions were just going to be temporary and would eventually go away. I had to find a way to work through them step by step. Because the positive part of stepping into the unfamiliar is that we grow our ability to adapt to changes, which can feel very empowering.

When we push ourselves to explore the unknown and connect with the world around us, we discover an inner strength that we didn’t know existed.

And that’s what feeling at home really means – creating a sense of belonging and purpose no matter where we are. We can use our inner strength to release any doubts, fears or anxiety, and use our intuition as a powerful compass to guide us in the right direction. This is how we can experience that true sense of home within ourselves.

So, you may wonder, how do I do this practically speaking?

Take the time to connect with yourself through for example meditation, journaling or spending time in nature. Deepen your understanding of the world and your place in it and reflect on your values and beliefs. Seek out experiences that fill you with joy, such as pursuing a passion or a hobby that lights up your soul (or dance on your favourite song like nobody’s watching!).

Remember to connect with others too – finding a supportive community can make all the difference. Whether you want to focus more on your wellbeing, happiness or your spiritual journey of finding home within yourself, it can help to find someone who is a few steps ahead of you in this journey and who can guide you to the next step.

Whether it’s a trusted friend, your partner or a professional, someone who you can lean on whenever you need to. You don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

The ultimate way to feel at home away from home is to embrace the changes, take the time to get to know ourselves, and to immerse ourselves in the things in life that bring us joy, fulfillment and inner peace.

It’s a beautiful journey that’s worth embarking on and what the path looks like is unique to all of us. Just start with taking the first step and see where it leads you.
